Egypt Scams and Bargaining Tips at Khan El Khalili Market | الفصال في خان الخليلي في مصر
I've been living in Cairo for over 2.5 years, and today I'll be showing you some tips and tricks on how to barter in the markets of Egypt. I'm headed to Khan el-Khalili, the oldest and most famous market here in Cairo, to show you how it's done. Yalla bina!
Want to donate to the channel? You can buy me a shawarma! 😂 But really, I just found out this website "buy me a coffee" exists and created an account, because, well, why not? I really just appreciate your support by watching my videos and I'm not asking you to donate, but, if you feel like it, now there's a place you can. Donations will probably just go to me making more street food videos. Here's the link: www.buymeacoffee.com/gventures
Welcome to the channel! I am a lover of language and a culturally curious lady just making my way through life one day at a time. I live to learn, I love to travel and explore, try new things and meet interesting people anywhere and everywhere in the world. Come along with me as I solo travel the globe and discover fascinating new places, try delicious local food, meet lovely people, and share a moment in time on this beautiful planet, our Earth.

      I can't really make a video about that because I don't know much, unfortunately. I use WE company for my home WIFI and it works well. As long as there are no power cuts, you should be okay. But quality, speed, and power will perhaps depend on what are you live in, amongst other unknown factors.

    I was in Egypt last March when the Egyptian pound lost 1/3th of its value overnight. You could tell people were really desperate so I fell bad about bartering.

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures 4 години тому

      Wasn't that in February of 2022? I know it lost a lot of value at that time, I remember the panic on the streets as well. Since that time, it went through several more devaluations, it's been a very hard time here for everyone. It finally stabilized a bit a few months ago when they began floating the pound, but times are still very tough, and it certainly isn't worth what it was when I first arrived in Egypt in October of 2021.

    That was such a fun video! I love your interaction with the local people, and they all seem to love you!! And how nice to meet two of your subscribers at the end! But now I think we must call you 'Gisselle the movie star' from now on, following the comment at 32:00 ...haha!! I'm loving all the sights and sounds of this famous market, and the way you showed your compassion for the kitty cat and baby at 42:23 ...that was so sweet, although it upset you a little, I think. And how charming and eloquent was the young man at 47:30 - he was so enthusiastic! Oh yes, I look forward to seeing you taking your motorbike through these narrow streets. I am sure that would be so much fun!! Thank you again for putting so much effort into your videos, Gisselle! 😀William

      Yes the markets are great fun, I love wandering around in all the souqs here in Egypt! There's so much to see and do, and friendly, interesting people to meet (not to mention it's great for photography and filming)! Ahaha that guy asking if I'm a movie star 🤣 It had me chuckling. But it's a very hard life for the cats here on the streets of Cairo, I really feel for them. I wish I could provide them all with a loving home and comfortable life 🥺 The boy was very enthusiastic, it was endearing. I was a little unsure how to respond, he really was acting like he was meeting a movie star 🤣 Very nice young man though. And yeah, meeting subscribers at the end, I loved it! It's cool to meet people in the flesh that are watching my videos, I'm always happy to meet them and thank them in person for their support, and find out a little bit more about them ❤️ Lol I really should take the motorbike into the market, that would be hilarious. I'm just afraid I would roll over someone's feet, it can get so crowded! 🤣 Thanks so much for watching the entire video William, I think you may be my biggest supporter! 🥰🙏

    I like these type of videos so much, I definitely would want to buy many things 😅😅 but I don’t have the patience to negotiate prices, is there any shops with fixed prices (I’m not sure if “fixed” is the correct word to use” but you know what I mean) ????? ☺️☺️

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures 11 годин тому

      Fixed prices would be a good word to use. But I don't think you'll find any shops with fixed prices (labels on them), or they would be very few and far in between. I actually can't ever remember seeing a shop that is selling souvenirs that had prices labeled on them in Egypt. If there is such a shop, I imagine it would be overpriced anyway. And then, with that thought, if you're willing to spend a lot of money for less of a hassle, then you could just not bother negotiating in the market and pay whatever the vendor is asking for right away. Depending on the strength of your country's currency, your style of travel and the amount of money you like to spend, it might still not be too much for you 🤷‍♀️

    I would only go shopping with a local if i was already hanging out with them and even then only if it was a big ticket item. Egyptians are no more likely to allow trade to walk away than anywhere else in the world. It may help if you reflect that the price you agreed at point of sale was the right price. Many times I have been out shopping with my bf (who is Egyptian) and when they see me, they start to tell HIM higher prices. It has happened many times, actually. So sometimes, for certain things, he will go ahead of me and ask the price (or I will pretend like I am not with him) until he has been told the price, then I will walk up to him and join him

I have many times asked my bf when I get back home if what I paid was reasonable for an item, and if it's not something he is familiar with (for example, if I am buying scarves or jewelry) he really has no idea how much I should pay. He can estimate if I paid too much, but he many times doesn't know how much a scarf should even cost. It's a real drag, because you can't possibly know the cost of every item out there. When in reality, so many normal, regular, everyday Egyptians are kind, welcoming, and generous, asking for or wanting nothing in return. I can't count the amount of times I've been invited for tea, offered help on the side of the road while on my motorbike trips, invited into people's homes for dinner, the hospitality is overwhelming. I know there are plenty of local areas within Cairo itself, and that is usually where I frequent in my daily life, but I also can't wait to go on another motorbike trip to some other cities around the country, to experience the lesser known and rarely-visited-by-tourists towns and villages.

You are correct that you will get ripped off if you are not a local, it doesn't matter what color you are, what country you are from, or even if you speak Arabic. Ah, sorry to say, but that is not entirely true. I know many guides and people that work in tourism, and the guides make commission on the things you are buying. So the more money you pay and spend, the more money they make. It's profitable for them. I could give many examples of this that I know for a fact happened and people paid more than they should have

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures 14 годин тому

      I don't think it's true about the guide thing, because guides make money off the things you buy in the market, and they all have their connections, shops they bring you to that have "good prices," but actually they are just making commissions and you could find better deals if you went out and tried on your own. But I do agree, if you are not local, they will charge you more, whether you speak Arabic or not doesn't matter. They will think you are 5aleegy and rich. Even Egyptians that have been abroad for a long time get charged a lot, I have met up with a few Egyptian subscribers that live abroad and have been for a long time, they tell me they are treated like a foreigner. The locals can tell 😅

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures 17 годин тому

      A budget of $15 a day?? That is tough. I guess it depends on how you are living though. $15 a day is possible. I mean, here in Egypt it is easily possible to live on that, if you aren't traveling around and doing touristic stuff. I think the same is possible in Argentina, again, if you find cheap rent and aren't going out to eat often at all, etc. India and Nepal you can live on $15 a day, Vietnam too. Maybe Thailand, but in the last few years things have gotten more expensive there. But that would be living, not traveling. Traveling is always more expensive, because you're on the move, can't always cook for yourself, etc. Inflation is up all around the world, so it's hard to know what things cost these days in other countries. I've been to many countries in the past, but the cost of things has changed since those times.

    Even 30 dollar is to much for one day ‏‪1:26‬‏

    • @Gventures
      @Gventures 18 годин тому

      No it is not. $30 for a hotel or hostel for the night, transportation whether that is a bus, taxi, train or tuk tuk, food for the entire day, drinks, souvenirs, and sightseeing, literally everything you will spend in a day. $30 is not that much. Just entry fee into the pyramids is over $11 USD for a foreigner, as an example (and that's just the general ticket price, not going inside any of the pyramids. If you want to go inside, it's even more expensive). Aside from sightseeing, one must still for a place to sleep for the night, food, etc. This is a cost for someone TRAVELING, not LIVING in a country. When people travel they are staying in temporary accommodation, which is always more expensive. They are sightseeing, which costs money to do, going into museums, etc. You obviously have not traveled much, or you would realize $30 a day is not a lot. When I was talking about having a budget of $30 a day, I was also referencing travel in India and Nepal anyways, not Egypt.
